Artist Statement

I am drawn to the behavior and transformation of materials—how they shift, reform, and degrade—as a metaphor for the constant exchange of energy in the universe. These physical changes mirror the emotional and psychological imprints of life’s events. Our experiences, often beyond our control, shape who we are. Time moves forward irreversibly, and though moments fade, their memory becomes embedded in our bodies.

My personal history—growing up during the Iran-Iraq war (1980–1988), immigrating to Canada in 2013 after eight years in Dubai, and major life transitions, including leaving my marriage in 2019—has profoundly influenced my artistic practice. These experiences form the core of my inquiry into identity, displacement, and memory.

In my studio, I work across immersive installation, performance, drawing, and painting. I use diverse materials and handcrafted tools to create expressive, often accidental mark-making that reflects the layered narratives of my life. My use of asemic writing—abstract, unreadable text—embodies the urgency and chaos of unspoken memories and uncontrollable moments. Through these marks, I communicate what cannot be said.

I invite viewers to see themselves in my work—to connect their own memories and experiences with the textures, gestures, and traces I leave behind.
